Great provocative piece.

Tanks are here to stay near term as others have correctly pointed out they are being misused in the current Ukraine War. They are meant to be part of a larger battle group and air superiority is key for protection.

My brother was in Desert Storm as a tank commander and was pleased with the performance of his Abrams group. Tank versus tank warfare has a lot to do with training, advanced targeting (night vision, infrared sensors etc) and maneuverability. The US Army is still considered the premier tank force in the world.

All that said, there are considerable efforts at DARPA to design AI driven remote tank-like vehicles that do not require a crew to drive, load and fire.

I believe that may be the future of the tank.
