Great piece. Growing up, we had a family friend who is much older than my parents, and he was gassed repeatedly during World War I. He attributed the gas to the end of his baseball career as a young man. He claimed that he could never run as quickly as he originally could due to the damage in his lungs. Interestingly, he died in his mid 90s.
